If you want to become a product manager, product marketer, or simply want to become an innovative leader — this workshop is for you.

Coming up with an innovative idea is hard. Finding a market for that innovation is harder still. Successfully building a business around your innovation is hardest of all. New technologies fail because they don’t find the right customer to serve. Executives, potential investors, partners, and customers overlook valuable opportunities because they don’t see what you see.

That’s where Storytelling for Innovation comes in.

Storytelling for Innovation uses narrative structure and storytelling to enable innovators to get their product or service right in the first place and then inspire others to embrace it. In this two-day workshop, you will:

  • Learn the psychology of why stories are so powerful
  • Understand how to evaluate and improve upon your idea through the lens of a narrative
  • Identify the essential techniques of storytelling to help others fall in love with your idea
  • Practice building and telling stories

David uses examples of narratives from movies, product innovations and great leaders to illustrate his points and engages participants in a series of exercises to practice story development and storytelling.

David lives at the intersection of innovation and storytelling. He helps entrepreneurs, business professionals and artists focus their ideas through the power of narrative. In short, he helps people get their story straight.

Earlier in his career, David led the ad agency J. Walter Thompson in San Francisco, held senior marketing roles at two tech start-ups and was VP Marketing at Yahoo! in the mid-2000’s.

David now runs Box Out Industries where he works with entrepreneurs, product managers and marketers to develop and convey their product stories. He also started Spiral Staircase Productions to collaborate with artists and is currently developing two original musicals. David teaches innovation and design-thinking at Berkeley-Haas Business school, where he is Executive-in-Residence. He is an advisor at several accelerators (including Berkeley’s Skydeck, 500 Start-ups, and BRIAA) and is a frequent speaker about the power of storytelling.

David also serves as Chair of the Board of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and Vice President of the Board of the Destiny Arts Center in Oakland. He holds a BA from Brown University and an MBA from Columbia.
